Frequently asked questions
What is the UK Personal Allowance?
It's the amount you can earn tax-free each year — £12,570 for 2026/27. It tapers away by £1 for every £2 you earn over £100,000, reaching zero at £125,140, which is why very high earners effectively face a much higher marginal rate in that band.
What's the difference between Income Tax and National Insurance?
Income Tax funds general government spending and is charged in bands (20% basic, 40% higher, 45% additional). National Insurance (8% then 2% for most employees) primarily funds state pension and certain benefits. Both come off your gross pay, which is why this calculator includes both.
Why is the tax rate between £100,000 and £125,140 so high?
Because you're paying 40% Income Tax on that slice AND losing your Personal Allowance at the same time, the effective marginal rate in that band is around 60% — one of the highest in the UK system, which is why many higher earners increase pension contributions to stay below £100,000.
Does this apply in Scotland?
No — Scotland sets its own Income Tax bands and rates (Scottish Income Tax), which differ from England, Wales and Northern Ireland. National Insurance is the same UK-wide. This calculator uses the England/NI/Wales bands.
